In general, costume jewellery is made from base metals rather than precious metals such as gold or silver. Most repairs require heat and solder, which can cause base metals to melt, distort or fail completely.
General rule is if your piece is made from silver, gold, palladium or platinum then it can be repaired. Also, check to see if there is a hallmark as only precious metals carry those.
Please keep this in mind
- Many costume jewellery pieces cannot be repaired safely.
- Jewellery made from metals like Stainless Steel, Brass, Tin, Titanium and aluminium cannot be repaired.
- This includes many fashion and designer brands such as Armani, Vivienne Westwood and Swarovski.
- Jewellery made from fabric, cord, leather and glass cannot be reapired.
- We will still review your enquiry and reply with guidance where appropriate.
Why this matters
We would rather be clear early than encourage you to send in an item that may not be repairable.
Before anything is sent in
They do not behave like gold or silver during traditional jewellery repair work.
Soldering and repair heat can damage or destroy the underlying metal.
This helps avoid sending in items that are unlikely to be repairable.
